The Boys Omnibus Vol. 1

by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson

Overall Book Review:

The Boys is a raunchy, irreverent take on the super hero genre. Far from the heroic and adventurous titles that inspired it, this graphic novel is filled with heroes that are only heroes because they’re marginally less horrible than the villains. This dark reimagining draws readers into a world where power isn’t necessarily used for the good of humanity, and where heroes don’t save people just because they can. What if super-powered men and women behaved like a super-powered subset representative of humanity with all its rage, envy, lust, and pride to go along with any virtues that some in that subset might exhibit. More than that, it addresses the logical conclusion that a subset of humanity that was inherently more powerful than the rest is as likely to become corrupted by that power as to use it for any sort of good. The story deals with dark material, but the characters are compelling with deep motivations, and the heroes have a drive to set some things right where they are able, even if that right seems to be a drop in the bucket compared to the might of evil and greed in the world. The story is interesting and alternates between action, character development, and even laugh-out-loud dark humor, and the art used to tell the tale is vivid and beautifully executed, even when the subject matter is not so beautiful. This graphic novel is an interesting read for fans, one that touches the genres of superheroes, action, and horror and leaves the reader waiting for the next installment.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
