Book Review

Publisher's Note:

When life feels like it's closing in around you, sometimes the solution is to open the doors wide and invite others in . . . Jewel McKerry is on the brink of unraveling as she heads home to Oregon to help care for her father who has early-onset dementia. Her thirteen-year-old daughter is upset about the move. Her beekeeper dad is a humorous handful. Her mom is overworked and overwhelmed. Finances are stretched tight. And, according to her father, the neighbors are nothing but trouble. Despite all of these challenges, Jewel takes on one more when she convinces her parents to turn their decrepit farmhouse into a B&B in order to make some needed money. Her old high school flame turned contractor steps in to help, but Jewel isn't sure she can really trust him. And those "troublesome" neighbors? The handsome widower and his teenage daughter just might be the key to making all this work. Get ready for a summer filled with family, good humor, and new beginnings!…

Welcome to the Honey B & B

by Melody Carlson

Overall Book Review:

Welcome to the Honey B & B by Melody Carlson is a standalone novel taking place in modern times. The story starts out slow and never really gains any serious momentum. This is the perfect book to read swinging in your hammock in the back yard or lounging on the beach.

The plot revolves around a man suffering from early-onset dementia and those who live around him. In many ways the deeply personal story is quite touching. Each character has his or her own perspective on what is happening. The author jumps between each of these characters to tell the tale. Most of the time, this works well. Some of the characters are so amazingly insensitive that readers might wonder who the author knows who acts that way.

The book rolls along and then the story comes to an end without much of an “end” feel to it. Perhaps the author wrote it this way to show readers that dealing with this type of illness does not really have a specific and happy ending. Life just keeps moving along until one day it doesn’t. Not a bad read, but not a super compelling read either.
