Before anything is said about the writing, let’s pause to appreciate this book’s cover. Vivid with saturated colors, it is gorgeous and will be sure to grab the attention of many young readers. Regarding the narrative, it is a first-person account of Max’s summer away with his mom on a near-by island where he hopes to be someone new. His first encounter is an injured octopus and that introduces him to kids and adults who are supportive. Additionally, it gives him a lot purpose. Max was already interested in animals, but he develops a special bond with the octopus.

There is nothing fantastical about this fiction; everything that happens to Max is quite realistic and plausible. The book will appeal to young readers who like animals and ecological themes. However, because it is realistic, this book has some sad moments that will tug at young readers’ heart strings, particularly if they are tender-hearted.
