Book Review

Publisher's Note:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 Ashton is just a typical small town. But when a skeptical reporter and a prayerful, hardworking pastor begin to investigate mysterious events, they suddenly find themselves caught up in a hideous New Age plot to enslave the townspeople, and eventually the entire human race. The physical world meets the spiritual realm as the battle rages between forces of good and evil. This Present Darkness is a gripping story that brings keen insight into spiritual warfare and the necessity of prayer. Since its original publication more than 2.7 million copies have been sold. This Present Darkness

by Frank Peretti

Overall Book Review:

This story, written by a Christian author, is the ultimate in good vs. evil.  In a showdown between spiritual armies, this fictional tale brings to life the possible reality of spiritual warfare.  Make no mistake, in the end, this is a glimpse into the world of angels fighting on behalf of God and demons fighting on behalf of Satan.  Absolute evil is brought to life in this reluctant page turner.  Reluctant only in the sense that the story is riveting and turning the page is a must; however, it can be a breath-sucking event to find out what spell-binding even comes next.  Giving the reader a different perspective than other Christian books, this isn’t just about people going to church and doing good things.  It shows the spiritual and the physical aspects and how one can possibly affect the other.

The author, Frank Paretti, has written at least twenty-one books with over fifteen million sold worldwide.  In this book he has done a mesmerizing job describing and bringing to life the spiritual world.  His visual pictures draw the reader in and bring the story to life.  This story tells the tale of pastors, church goers, witches, demon-possessed individuals, and everyday people being affected by the spiritual world.  This story isn’t for the faint or young of heart because the battles are not just written in a realistic way but are emotional and gripping.  In the end, God is faithful and the devil is real.

About the Reviewer

Reading a good adventure story has always been a vacation in the theater of my mind. When I’m stressed or just need to get away for a few minutes, I love the opportunity to climb into somebody else’s world. I didn’t enjoy reading until I was in the Air Force and building bombs in Korea; it was a wonderful distraction from the real world. (I tried bull riding, but it wasn’t exciting enough.)
