Book Review

Publisher's Note:

"Cheney fights with the hospital staff of St. Francis for the fair treatment of San Francisco's undesirables with the support of only one man, Shiloh Irons. " Cheney Duvall travels from New Orleans to San Francisco, escorted by Shiloh Irons. In the St. Francis de Yerba Buena Hospital, Dr. Baird and most of the others treat her with respect, but she finds some of the medical personnel are doubtful of her character, her intent, and her skills. She must prove herself and assert her authority again and again. Outside the hospital walls, San Francisco teems with brothels, criminal gangs, and poverty-stricken vagrants and immigrants. The hospital has decreed that none of these people will receive treatment, and when Cheney fights to combat these prejudices, she finds that the only support she can count on is from Shiloh Irons. But when catastrophe suddenly strikes, even Cheney finds that none of her medical education has prepared her for such an overwhelming disaster. With so many casualties and severe injuries, who will help?…

Overall Book Review:

It’s always fun to stumble across a great series that’s fully written so you don’t have to wait for the next book to be published.  Teaching people to challenge the norm, this series is a gold mine.  In a day when being a doctor was a man’s profession, Dr. Chaney Duval is bold and daring yet feminine and caring.  Going head-to-head with the best male doctors of her time, she teaches them a thing or two about cutting-edge medical techniques that she’s refined.  In a day when there’s no such thing as an emergency room, Chaney continually challenges the status quo trying to create better medical care.  In a day when education was hard to come by, Dr. Duvall is an advocate on behalf of the nurses who stand by the doctors on a daily basis doing their bidding.  Boldly living out her faith in, she is a continual inspiration to the people around her.

Shiloh is Dr. Duvall’s nurse and has been for at least two years.  Accompanying her on most of her adventures, he often saves her when she finds herself in precarious situations.  Occasionally, he’s the voice of reason when she gets all fired-up.  Moments of tenderness between the two main characters continue to keep the reader hopeful for a future romance.  There are many secondary characters who add to the story but they never overshadow Chaney and Shiloh.

Lynn Morris, the author, has written at least 20 books.  There are eight in the Dr. Chaney Duval series with another three in a spinoff series with Shiloh, her nurse.  Several are written with her well-known father and author Gilbert Morris.  Every book in this series so far has been enjoyable.  I looked forward to reading the next one, too.

About the Reviewer

Reading a good adventure story has always been a vacation in the theater of my mind. When I’m stressed or just need to get away for a few minutes, I love the opportunity to climb into somebody else’s world. I didn’t enjoy reading until I was in the Air Force and building bombs in Korea; it was a wonderful distraction from the real world. (I tried bull riding, but it wasn’t exciting enough.)
