Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Ever since her mother left a few years ago, Annie has felt like the odd one out in her family. Her dad and brother are practical and organized--they just don't understand the way she thinks, in lines and color. Everywhere she turns, she feels like an outsider, even at school, so she's been reluctant to get close to anyone. When a "Ding-Dong-Ditch" attempt goes wrong, Annie finds herself stuck making amends with Gloria, the eccentric elderly lady she disturbed. As she begins to connect with Gloria and her weird little dog, it becomes clear that Gloria won't be able to live on her own for much longer. But it's this brief and important friendship that gives Annie the confidence to let people in, and see how rich life can be when you decide to make your own luck and chart your own path to happiness. In this heartwarming novel, acclaimed author Gillian McDunn shows us that even the most unexpected friendship has the power to change us forever.…

These Unlucky Stars

by Gillian McDunn

Overall Book Review:

Having enjoyed Gillian McDunn’s The Queen Bee and MeI was happy to check out her latest book, These Unlucky Stars. As enjoyable as expected, McDunn’s latest is a great read that both entertains and teaches valuable lessons. Main character Annie P. Logan is convinced she is unlucky and after reading this story, one can’t argue that she certainly experiences more than her share of hapless incidents. Fortunately, one of the incidents introduces her to a few lifelong friends who change her life for the better. A lot of growth and change occurs for Annie over the course of the story. In addition to creating an excellent plot, McDunn’s sensory language, especially the visual details, make the story pop from the pages. If you’re looking for a sweet story with a few laughs and lessons, give These Unlucky Stars a read.

About the Reviewer

I love being able to help busy parents who just don’t have the time to pre-screen all their children’s books and know how much I appreciate it as my sons have gotten older. I feel very blessed that my amazing husband makes it possible for me to be a stay-at-home mother to four amazing boys. When not reading or enjoying time with my family, I like baking, especially trying new recipes, and the occasional sewing project.
