“Service Before Self” is a motto often used by those who serve in the military. This is an amazing story of a man and his dog who both served during World War II and gave of themselves for their country. Leaving the comfort of their home, they each served in their own unit. Pack and sled dogs were used for search and recovery operations and saved a lot of lives. In Wilson’s unit, there were more dogs (known today as K9s) than people. How cool is that?
This story, based on actual history, has a happy ending so no tissues required. The pacing is comfortable and would make an excellent read aloud for the entire family. It’s also a great lesson for life: when you know you have something to offer, be willing to step up and give of yourself, even in small ways. This story is well worth the time and effort to read.
