Some Book Covers Are Pure Eye-Candy!
You can’t judge a book by its cover, but wow, some covers take our breath away. I asked our reviewers to pick some of their favorite book covers for books published in 2014 and tell why they adored them. Sometimes they just had to choose more than one! It looks like the young adult demographic dominated the reviewers’ favorite covers. Here are their picks:
Unmade (The Lynburn Legacy Book 3 by Sarah Rees Brennan
Unknown if it is dawn or dusk, this cover captures the beautiful figuration of a girl by the waters edge. The vibrancy of the orange contrasted with the black form of silhouettes catches the viewers eye as it is quite charming. – MaryLou
The Fall by Bethany Griffin
Eerie in nature, this cover uses sepia tones to create an almost antiqued gothic-like display of a girl with her back to you. Right away gawkers know they’ll find something sinister within the pages. – MaryLou
Cruel Beauty (Cruel Beauty Universe Book 1) by Rosamund Hodge
Viewers will immediately be intrigued with the intricacy in which a dark spiral staircase is weaved in with the petals of a vivid red rose, and is the girl running up or down the staircase? Running towards trouble or away? Because you know with a title like CRUEL BEAUTY there is bound to be trouble. Speaking of the title, could the font for the cover be any more perfect? I hate to overstate the word but Cruel Beauty’s jacket is well…beautiful! – MaryLou
Cress by Marissa Meyer
Cress by Marissa Meyer would be my favorite book cover. I love the long hair, and the rich colors are magical. – Amber
Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer
I had a hard time choosing just one! My choice is Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer. I can be a bit obsessive about organization, so the cover of Belzhar really appeals to me. I like the black and white with the title being a nice pop of color. The items on display all play a part in the story, and though it might be hard to understand why these items are important before you read this book, afterwards it will be very obvious. – Lydia

For middle grade, I find The School of Good and Evil covers stunning and the second book came out in 2014. – Sally
Lady Thief (Scarlet #2) by A.C. Gaughen
The artist managed to capture Scarlet’s beauty, wisdom and determination perfectly. – Jenny
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
The paperback version of this book came out in 2014. I love the tranquility and beauty of the lone boat on the water. – Rachel

How about Stitching Snow, by R. C. Lewis? The gorgeous cover art dares readers NOT to pick it up. – Leslie
Teach a Woman to Fish by Ritu Sharmir
(Library Large Print Edition released in 2014) TEACH A WOMAN TO FISH: OVERCOMING POVERTY AROUND THE GLOBE by Ritu Sharmir. I really liked the cover because it was so simple–kind of a bright salmon color with a single drawing of an abstract swirly fish. The fish really is a symbol for raising the world out of poverty. – Marilyn
