Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Grdankl the Strong, president of Krpshtskan, is plotting to take over the American government. His plan is to infiltrate the science fair at Hubble Middle School, located in a Maryland suburb just outside Washington. The rich kids at Hubble cheat by buying their projects every year, and Grdankl’s cronies should have no problem selling them his government-corrupting software. But this year, Toby Harbinger, a regular kid with Discount Warehouse shoes, is determined to win the $5,000 prize—even if he has to go up against terrorists to do it. With the help of his best friends, Tamara and Micah, Toby takes on Assistant Principal Paul Parmit, aka “The Armpit,” a laser-eyed stuffed owl, and two eBay buyers named Darth and the Wookiee, who seem to think that the Harrison Ford–signed BlasTech DL-44 blaster Toby sold them is counterfeit. What transpires is a hilarious adventure filled with mystery, suspense, and levitating frogs.…

Science Fair

by Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson

Overall Book Review:

Make no mistake, Science Fair by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson is pretty silly stuff and all about fun.  Levitating frogs, countries with a shortage of vowels, and car chases in Weinermobiles is not high art, but it sure is entertaining.  I can practically guarantee that a reader between the ages of 9 and 13 (especially if the reader is a boy) will like this book.  Rapid-fire dialogue moves this book along and I was impressed that the last third of the book was a sustained climax.  There is no such thing as over the top in this book.  If you or someone you know is in the need some escapism material, pick up Science Fair and get started.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
