Book Review

Publisher's Note:

In this sequel to The Wrath of Fate, the Airship Ophelia lists, burnt and broken, in a tropical sea. Her crew has been scattered across the face of a ruined world, or lost in time, and now it is my job to pick up the pieces. What’s to become of my wife and children, whom I left in the aerial city of Isla Aether? This was one of the last of the free cities, held aloft over a world given back to the beasts. I fear this city will be a target now that the Emperor’s life, and mercy, is at an end. What would become of Kristina if she was taken back to a life of servitude in the walled cities? What would become of the children if they were left wandering alone in wastelands filled with nomadic tribes and prehistoric predators? What is to become of young Lilith Tess, who jumped ship in the 1930’s only to be lost in time? I saw her again, here at the end of days, and she was a queen. What journey did she take that led her to this fate? And perhaps least important of all, what is to become of me and the last of our crew? I stand here on the deck of this ship that has held me through all my misguided attempts to make the world a better place. This ship, and her captain and crew, are beaten. Do I have the strength to pull everything together again? Do I still have the strength to get this ship flying? What other choice do I have?…

Overall Book Review:

Retrograde continues The Airship Pirates Chronicles that began in The Wrath of Fate. This second installment ramps up the action, making the narrative fly by. The characters are colorful and creatively depicted, and their antics are flamboyant and heroic as they make their way through a dystopian landscape of corrupt governments and survival of the fittest against a resurgent natural world. This book ties up some loose ends from the first novel, while introducing more peril. The world is creatively imagined and populated with all sorts of people, of the biological and robotic sort. The issues addressed in this book, such as environmental destruction and artificial intelligence, are even more timely now than they were when the book was written, and they are explored in a thoughtful and thought-provoking manner. The story moves at a fast pace, and the only possible complaint is that the ending feels a bit rushed, but perhaps that has more to do with not wanting the book to be over.

Note: This book is an immediate sequel after the first book in this series, The Wrath of Fate, and it should not be read by itself.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
