Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Before he was Sherlock’s rival, Moriarty fought against the unfair class caste system in London by making sure corrupt nobility got their comeuppance. But even the most well-intentioned plans can spin out of control—will Moriarty’s dream of a more just and equal world turn him into a hero…or a monster? In the late 19th century, Great Britain rules over a quarter of the world. Nobles sit in their fancy homes in comfort and luxury, while the working class slaves away at their jobs. When young Albert James Moriarty’s upper-class family adopts two lower-class orphans, the cruelty the boys experience at his family’s hands cements Albert’s hatred of the nobility he was born into. He asks the older of the two boys—who has a genius mind and a killer instinct—to help him rid the world of evil, starting with Albert’s own family!…

Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 1

by Ryosuke Takeuchi

Overall Book Review:

The first volume in the Moriarty the Patriot manga series lays out an origin story for Moriarty, the arch nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, and that origin paints the evil mastermind in a much more sympathetic light. Far from the evil villain that Sherlock fans love to loathe, this Moriarty is amoral, yet lives by a code. He’s methodical and ruthless, but his goals are centered on bringing positive change to the world, even if that positive change is built on a foundation of illegal and immoral actions taken out of necessity. The illustrations in this comic are very well-drawn, with some blood, along with implied violence to avoid wallowing in excessive gore. Fans of Sherlock Holmes, and readers who love a good antihero, will enjoy this book.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
