Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Before he was Sherlock’s rival, Moriarty fought against the unfair class caste system in London by making sure corrupt nobility got their comeuppance. But even the most well-intentioned plans can spin out of control—will Moriarty’s dream of a more just and equal world turn him into a hero…or a monster? After successfully establishing a foothold in Durham and cleansing the city of some of its corruption, William James Moriarty sets his sights on London. To make headway there, he needs the aid of his brother Albert. But while on his way to London, William is kidnapped by a gang of criminals! Will Albert be able to save him in time?…

Overall Book Review:

The second volume of Moriarty the Patriot continues to follow the exploits of the mastermind opponent of Sherlock Holmes, but this installment introduces Sherlock as an antagonist to the title character’s antihero schemes. The narrative delves more deeply into the exceptional intellectual ability of  both men, and introduces a few other familiar characters to the reader. The mystery that takes place in this novel is interesting and entertaining, and the characters’ banter is fun to read. The illustrations continue the series’ trend of beautiful artwork. This book is a must read for Sherlock Holmes and mystery fans.

Note: This is not a stand-alone graphic novel, and readers should therefore begin with Volume 1.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
