Book Review

Publisher's Note:

The international phenomenon that has sold more than two million copies, If Cats Disappeared from the World--now a Japanese film--is a heartwarming, funny, and profound meditation on the meaning of life. This timeless tale from Genki Kawamura (producer of the Japanese blockbuster animated movie Your Name) is a moving story of loss and reconciliation, and of one man’s journey to discover what really matters most in life. The young postman’s days are numbered. Estranged from his family and living alone with only his cat, Cabbage, to keep him company, he was unprepared for the doctor’s diagnosis that he has only months to live. But before he can tackle his bucket list, the devil shows up to make him an offer: In exchange for making one thing in the world disappear, the postman will be granted one extra day of life. And so begins a very strange week that brings the young postman and his beloved cat to the brink of existence. With each object that disappears, the postman reflects on the life he’s lived, his joys and regrets, and the people he’s loved and lost.…

Overall Book Review:

This slim tome has been gracing the New York Times Bestseller List recently. Translated from Japanese, it follows the last few days of a young man who is dying and his deal with the devil to extend his life. The writing style is not particularly artful, and it is unclear whether this is a deliberate artistic choice. The young man has many flashbacks to his various relationships so this novella is really a reflective one on what was and what might have been. Although it is a quick and pleasant read, with a very minor twist at the end, it didn’t stand out when lined up against similar books that examine death and what makes a life meaningful. However, judging by the numbers, it seems to have found a large audience it does resonates with.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
