Caught by Surprise is the third book in the Apart From the Crowd series. Jen Turano is a very funny author who dares to imagine what it would be like to have unconventional individuals thrust into the midst of very conventional society. This post-Civil War novel keeps one reading just to find out what Temperance Flowerdew will do next.
The opening scenes of the story immediately draw one’s attention and then curiosity keeps things going right up until the end. The situations are so ludicrous that one can’t help but think how amusing they would actually be, if they did happen.
Sprinkled in amongst this light-hearted fun is a healthy dose of emotional vulnerability. The story of Miss Flowerdew and her ill-wishing relatives is amazing and sad. It reminds readers that it is a blessing to be surrounded by those we love.
Gilbert Cavendish has no idea how his life will be changed. Watching him unwittingly fall for Temperance Flowerdew and not realize he is falling is rather amusing. This story will keep you laughing and smiling and leave you feeling satisfied.
