An Hour Unspent

by Roseanna M. White

Overall Book Review:

The Shadows Over England series by Roseanna M. White continues with An Hour Unspent. Although this could be read as a standalone, it is so much richer if a person reads the previous books of the series.  This historical fiction piece takes place in England during World War I.

Emotions run high in this book.  Some are heart-wrenching, others tender and still others romantic.  The reader is immediately involved in the relationships and feelings of the characters.  Old sorrows and fresh wounds abound as characters try and understand their place in events of the day.

Evelina Manning is an interesting character.  Her personality is quite fun, even though at times she seems a bit naive and shallow.  One of her most endearing traits is her desire to help others.  She truly cares about others even though she herself is undergoing deep disappointments and sorrows.

Barclay Pearce is a man who is mentioned in previous books of the series and it is fun to see how things go for him.  His upbringing and experiences have led him to adopt a wide variety of orphans into his “family.”  His compassion and caring for others is admirable.

Putting these leading characters together in this story makes for a fun and sometimes humorous read.  It also tugs at the heartstrings and reminds readers to be grateful for their blessings.  Enjoy the time spent looking into the lives of Barclay and Evelina.  Laugh with them, cry with them and love with them.
