Take a trip to paradise with Shadow Mountain’s latest Proper Romance, A Song for the Stars. Written by Ilima Todd, this delightful novel features a British sailor and a native chieftess in eighteenth century Hawai’i. Todd bases this unique love story on her own ancestors and shares the beauty of Hawaiian culture, language, and history on every page. Readers will adore Maile, a headstrong and fearless woman who constantly fights against her tribe’s traditional gender roles. The narrative is told from Maile’s point-of-view, but journal entries from protagonist John are also included. Todd not only tells a gorgeous romance, but weaves the consequences of exploration and colonization into the story. A Song for the Stars is fast-paced, with plenty of foreshadowing and figurative language. Discussion questions at the end make this a perfect book to read and talk about with friends. Highly recommended!
