2019? It is 2020. We know. We have just been a bit behind. We do like to have reviews in our database for Newbery Books because they stay continuously in print. So, while you are waiting for the announcement at the end of January for the 2020 books, you can make sure you are up-to-date also.

Merci Suárez Changes Gears by Meg Medina
This is contemporary fiction set in Florida. The protagonist has a lot of heavy things to deal with, but she is tough and you will root for her with every page-turn.
Newbery Honor Books
The Book of Boy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
This is a historical fiction novel set in the Middle Ages and the protagonist, Boy, is a hunchback. Boy goes on the adventure of a lifetime and learns much along the way. Excellent!
The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani
Set in India in 1947, this book is a beautiful example of historical fiction. With fabulous details about the culture, this novel is written in letter format. (Glossary at the back ever so helpful!)
