Publisher's Note:

Siblings Kareem and Amina are dreading a night with their neighbor and babysitter Old Mrs. Heeley. The only good thing is, she always brings cupcakes. But when they go to get a tasty treat, Kareem and Amina find that the cupcakes seem to be devouring one another. Will Kareem and Amina be able to stop the madness before the zombie cupcakes take over? Overall Book Review:

Zombie Cupcakes: And Other Scary Tales is just what it sounds like. It is a book of short stories that are a mix of horror frosting spread atop silly, fun tales with sprinkles of shock value on top. This collection of stories is suitable for grade school children and is unlikely to cause nightmares so much as it is to entertain in the way a shocking campfire tale might. It’s scary for a second, and then life moves on and it doesn’t linger. The book keeps in mind its audience, using grade school protagonists in many of the major roles. Each story is only a few pages and can be read in one sitting even by a novice reader. However, the book lacks any substance. The stories are entertaining briefly, but will likely be quickly forgotten in the same way a sweet treat like a cupcake is enjoyable for a moment, but that specific cupcake is unlikely to be remembered…unless of course it’s a zombie cupcake.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
