Book Review

Publisher's Note:

April didn't mean to start the fire. She wasn’t the one who broke the vase. April didn’t ask to go live in a big, creepy mansion with a bunch of orphans who just don't understand that April isn’t like them. After all, April’s mother is coming back for her someday very soon. All April has to do is find the clues her mother left inside the massive mansion. But Winterborne House is hiding more than one secret, so April and her friends are going to have to work together to unravel the riddle of a missing heir, a creepy legend, and a mysterious key before the only home they’ve ever known is lost to them forever.…

Overall Book Review:

Author Ally Carter nails it again in this middle grade series. This book has it all: adventure, mystery, great characters, atmosphere, and heart. The plot takes twisty turns instead of a more linear path, as some books for young readers do. It is this blend of progress and regression, explanations and mysteries, character growth and consistency that make this novel so well-executed. The protagonist, April, has the right amount of spunk and vulnerability so that the reader is able to root for her. Slowly throughout the book, more and more characters join her orbit until there is full cast of characters and a reluctant hero.

This is the first book in a series. Masterfully, a satisfying number of answers are provided to many questions, but an oddly equally satisfying number of answers are not provided so there is plenty of room for the author to run in future installments and the reader is itching for more.

The audio version is excellently executed and highly recommended.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
