Book Review

Publisher's Note:

An addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul. Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret--she's a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt. But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead--her gumiho soul--in the process. Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl--he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to men. He's drawn to her anyway. With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous and reignite a generations-old feud . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon's.…

Wicked Fox

by Kat Cho

Overall Book Review:

Wicked Fox is an interesting take on a story as old as time.  Think Romeo and Juliet, but with a fantasy twist.  This book is part love story, part mystery, part thriller, and all interesting.

The characters in this novel are straight-forward and easy to remember.  Miyoung is a girl who is half human and half fantastical creature that feeds on other’s life force.  She uses her abilities, or need to feed, to right the wrongs of those who have previously been harmed or killed by the nefarious acts of others.  Jihoon is a teenage boy who makes the mistake of being in her path during a full moon when she must feed.  Through a series of misadventures, the two end up linked and the story takes off from there.

The plot line is fast-paced and even though the novel is longer in page count, you’ll find yourself moving pretty quickly through it.  The chapters are short which makes for easy pick up and put down reading.  While the overall feel of the book is a little dark magic-esque, younger readers could probably grasp the story line and be able to follow pretty easily.

The only drawback to this book was its lack of a glossary.  The majority of the book is set in Seoul.  A lot of Korean language terms are used throughout the book.  While you can glean the meaning of the majority from the context, I would have greatly benefited from a glossary to assure I was understanding the terms or for more descriptive content.  I found myself heading to Google translate a lot to ascertain what a term meant or to verify my contextual guesses.

Overall a good book with an imaginative take on forbidden love, forgiveness, and the power of friendship.

About the Reviewer

I am a full-time mom, full-time wife, and overtime reader. I have been an avid reader for as long as anyone can remember. It must run in the family because both my mother and grandmother are also voracious readers and often pass books back and forth. Almost any genre can spark my interest, but I often go in streaks, reading a bunch of books from one genre, then switching to another for a while and back again.
