Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Caro and Markos have settled into a routine: Wake up, eat breakfast, and try to figure out who might attempt to assassinate Markos today . . . so the currents aren't exactly calm. Markos is in constant danger, and his claim to the throne is shaky without the support of an army. But then a powerful Archon offers Markos the military might he needs in exchange for marrying his daughter. Markos and Caro must decide which is more important: their love for each other or the fate of Akhaia. With shipwrecks, lost treasure, old and new enemies, dark magic, and breathtaking romance, Sarah Tolcser weaves another epic story about chasing your fate and charting your own course.…

Overall Book Review:

Here’s a book that made me remember how fond I was of sea-based stories, like The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, or literally any Brian Jacques book that takes place on a ship.

Whisper of the Tide by Sarah Tolcser is the second book in the Song of the Current series. Reading the second book makes me want to check out the first one. The main character is a young and seemingly newish Sea Captain by the name of Caroline Oresteia, but she usually goes by Caro. Chosen by the sea goddess, Caro has apparently left her old life on a river wherry to become one of the sea goddess’s favorites.  Torn between the sea goddess’ will and her own desire to stay with Markos, a young noble with a claim to the throne and whose very claim makes him a target for assassins, Caro must decide what’s more important: Her duty to the sea goddess, or the fate of her heart.

This was a really great story with a fun main character, and the only thing that dropped it from five stars to four was the obligatory sexual scene between the main character and her romantic interest. This scene also makes this a recommended read for older young adults.

Overall, though, a great story and a pleasure to read. I’m looking forward to the other book in the series.
