Whatever You Do, Don’t Run is an extremely entertaining book.  Peter Allison’s experiences as a safari guide had me laughing out loud, gasping with surprise, and reading parts to my family at the dinner table.  (Although, I will say that I had to be careful to edit a little for the kids because of some of the adult language.)

The author takes you along with him on his adventures through the African savanna with descriptions that make you feel like you’ve been there.  I was also left with a sense of surprise that Peter Allison is still alive–there were times I forgot he must have made it out safely because he had written the book.

Although the main draw for me was the humor, I still learned a little about Botswana and a lot about the animals that live there.  You definitely don’t have to be interested in African travel to enjoy this one. 

Content Analysis:

Profanity/Language:  7 religious exclamations; 7 mild obscenities; 1 derogatory name; 12 scatological words; 6 F-word derivatives.

Violence/Gore:  There is a detailed description of a non-fatal lion attack.

Sex/Nudity:  There are a few mild sexual references; some references to animals mating; an extended scene wherein adults are playing strip poker.

Mature Subject Matter:

Terminal Illness; Death.

Alcohol / Drug Use:

A drinking game is played with several adults; references to adults getting drunk after work.
