Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Who will be the new gods? The God of Strife is dead, destroyed in his attack on Tantras, and Midnight and her allies have recovered the First Tablet of Fate - one of a pair of artifacts that will return the gods to their former glory and save the Realms from the fallen deities' wrath. To complete their quest, though, the heroes must travel across the world to Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, and even pass into the Realm of the Dead. But both Cyric and Myrkul, God of Death, want the Tablets of Fate for their own dark ends, and they will stop at nothing to capture Midnight - even if it means the destruction of the Realms.…

Waterdeep

by Troy Denning (writing as Richard Awlinson)

Overall Book Review:

Waterdeep is the third book in the Avatar series, and the final installment of what was originally the Avatar Trilogy. As such, it provides an ending to the tale of the adventurers who began their journey in Shadowdale and Tantras. This book is fast-paced and exciting, and its scale is even grander than the two novels that preceded it. The author skillfully draws the readers to the characters by giving deeper glimpses to their personalities and making the situation that they are in more poignant, and in so doing he makes those characters easy to love…or to hate. The setting of the story spans a large portion of the rich fantasy world that the characters inhabit, and the varying cultures of the places that they travel through are entertaining and add depth and a feeling of realism to the otherwise fantastical narrative. Readers who have journeyed this far in the novels will not be disappointed with the conclusion of this arc of the heroes’ story.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
