Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Since its publication in 1986, the deliciously frightening novel Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story has not only haunted countless readers, but has also won eleven state book awards. The spine-chilling tale begins when twelve-year-old Molly and her ten-year-old brother, Michael, learn that they’ll be moving to a refurbished old church in rural Maryland with their mother’s new husband, Dave, and their younger stepsister, Heather. Heather is an insufferable brat, but that turns out to be the least of the family’s worries. When she strikes up a friendship with Helen, the malevolent ghost of a seven-year-old girl who died in a mysterious fire more than a hundred years ago, things really heat up . . . and Heather’s unsettling threat, “Wait till Helen comes,” becomes a grim reality.…

Overall Book Review:

Wait Till Helen Comes has been enjoyed by young readers of the horror genre for decades. Its eerie otherworldliness is made more chilling by the vulnerable humanity of its young protagonists. Molly and her younger brother, Michael, are uprooted from their familiar city life and moved to the country, where they must learn how to get along in rural life and how to get along with their new stepfather and his daughter. As if blending a family was not a difficult enough task, Molly and Michael discover a further complication. Their new home is haunted, and the ghost is not friendly.

This novel combines touching scenes of familial love with equally tense moments of family strife and mixes both with the spooky suspense of supernatural horror. The characters in the book are easy to relate to and seem like real people with some good personality traits and some flaws that make them more believable than the one-dimensional characters who often inhabit ghost stories written for children. This is especially true for Molly, as the story is told mostly from her point of view, and she has attitudes and struggles that middle grade readers will identify with.

The author uses the setting of this story very effectively, and the picturesque language with which she writes transforms what should be a peaceful, rural setting into a sinister backdrop. The characters’ unfamiliarity with the setting heightens the suspense, creating a story that is genuinely creepy without resorting to gore or the literary equivalent of cinema jump-scares. This book is hard to put down, as it has plenty of spine-tingling moments spread throughout an engaging plot.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
