Book Review

Publisher's Note:

An Edgar Award Winner for Juvenile Fiction Perfect for mystery buffs with “elements of Alex Rider, James Bond, and Sherlock Holmes,” (School Library Journal) the Framed! series stars the only kid on the FBI Director’s speed dial and several international criminals’ most wanted lists! Middle school is hard. Solving cases for the FBI is even harder. Doing both at the same time—well that’s just crazy. But that doesn’t stop Florian Bates! After helping the FBI solve an art theft at the National Gallery and uncovering a DC spy ring, Florian’s finding life at Alice Deal Middle School a little boring. But that’s all about to change! His FBI handler, Marcus, has a job for him! Is it a bank robbery? Counterfeit ring? International espionage? Actually it’s middle school pranks… Sounds pretty ordinary except that the pranks are happening at a prestigious private school attended by the President’s daughter who may—or may not—be involved. So Florian and Margaret are going undercover to see if they can use their TOAST skills to figure out what’s going on before the media gets hold of the story. However, once the crime-solving pair arrive at the school, they discover that there’s a lot more than a few pranks going on and the conspiracy of silence reaches all the way to the top. Then a student vanishes in the middle of a concert at the Kennedy Center and things take a sinister turn! Can Florian and Margaret save the day? Or are they about to get toasted?…

Vanished!

by James Ponti

Overall Book Review:

Vanished!, second in the TOAST mystery series by James Ponti, finds Florian Bates and his friend Margaret being called upon to help the FBI out again. This time they go undercover to a prestigious private school with students from all the high ranking, DC-elite families, including the President’s daughter. She just may or may not be involved in something a little nefarious, which Florian and Margaret have been asked to look into. What seem to be innocent school pranks lead them to secret societies, conspiracies, international espionage, and kidnappings. All keeping the reader eagerly flipping pages and guessing to the very end of the novel.

The TOAST sleuthing series is the perfect mix of modern mysteries, with a little of the Sherlock Holmes feel and middle school fun, without the middle school drama and angst to weigh it down. Such a fun series that is like a breath of fresh air in the literary world that seems to be bogged down with serious issues and adult content in middle grade novels.

About the Reviewer

I remember as a young girl sneaking out of my bedroom to read by the hall light my parents left on, just so I could finish an exciting book. I’ve always loved books and reading is somewhat of a passion for me–something I’m passing on to my kids. I have four children and I have a hard time making them turn out the light when they say, “But I just got to the good part”.
