Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre briefly tells the story of the destruction of the wealthiest black neighborhood in the early 20th century. Though this is event is one in which hundreds of people lost their lives, homes, and livelihoods, it is one that is not often taught in history classes and one that had not received much attention until recent events placed it in the eye of popular culture. The book does not give many details of the event and paints it only in broad strokes, since it is written for children. The author and illustrator bring a background of personal relationship to the subject matter and story, and this is clear in the way that they tell the story in a heartfelt manner. This story is a good read for children who are interested in history.
