Book Review

Publisher's Note:

The Inheritance Games meets Ocean’s Eleven in this cinematic heist thriller where a cutthroat competition brings together the world’s best thieves and one thief is playing for the highest stakes of all: her mother's life. At only seventeen years old, Ross Quest is already a master thief, especially adept at escape plans. Until her plan to run away from her legendary family of thieves takes an unexpected turn, leaving her mother’s life hanging in the balance. In a desperate bid, she enters the Thieves’ Gambit, a series of dangerous, international heists where killing the competition isn’t exactly off limits, but the grand prize is a wish for anything in the world—a wish that could save her mom. When she learns two of her competitors include her childhood nemesis and a handsome, smooth-talking guy who might also want to steal her heart, winning the Gambit becomes trickier than she imagined. Ross tries her best to stick to the family creed: trust no one whose last name isn’t Quest. But with the stakes this high, Ross will have to decide who to con and who to trust before time runs out. After all, only one of them can win.…

Thieves’ Gambit

by Kayvion Lewis

Overall Book Review:

If you love a great heist story, then look no further than Thieves’ Gambit. This young adult thriller hits all the notes: eclectic characters, international venues, intrigue, impossible targets, and non-stop action. All those elements make for an engaging and fun read. The emphasis of the novel is the heists and action; however, the author does include a romantic interest, a smidgeon of character internal conflict, and some reasonably plausible motivations for the various characters. The protagonist, Ross, is a spunky and resourceful young woman with serious trust issues. This leaves her and the reader always guessing about the other characters. Although the pacing at times felt almost rushed and some things were quickly glossed over, this was one of the more enjoyable young adult reads I have had in a while–partly because the author knew exactly what she wanted to deliver. Be warned that although this book doesn’t technically end in a cliffhanger, it leaves a lot open-ended. It is perfectly poised for a sequel and hopefully we will get one.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
