Book Review

Publisher's Note:

There will come a time... When freedom is considered too dangerous. Cities are walled, and citizens are chained to round-the-clock jobs to keep them controlled. Change and progress are outlawed. There will come a time... When clockworks wake up, only to find they are not allowed to be awake. They hide in fear, not daring to break their chains of slavery. There will come a time... When freedom is outlawed. The last free people must scrape a living in the dirt of the prairies, or in the skies above them. These hardened men and women fight for their lives and their freedom against beasts of the plains, police in the cities, and pirates in the sky. When freedom is outlawed, only the outlaws are free. This time will come, and it will be my fault. Sorry about that.…

The Wrath of Fate

by "Captain" Robert Brown

Overall Book Review:

The Wrath of Fate is a unique sort of novel, as it is written to accompany and provide context to the music of Abney Park, a real-world steampunk-themed band, and the books are written by the band’s vocalist. This first novel in the set is part time-travel romp, part swashbuckling escapade, and part steampunk dystopian tale. It chronicles the adventures of Captain Robert Brown, a musician from the modern era, as he follows a series of unusual happenings that lead him on an exploration of the past and future. The events are told from the perspective of Captain Brown, and the places and people that he encounters are described using his dry sense of humor and businesslike stoicism that borders on fatalism. The colorful narrative of this storytelling perspective makes the tale feel like a fun romp that moves the action along through the novel at a quick pace. The sci-fi aspects of the story are not delved too deeply into as far as the scientific end of them, and the emphasis in the “fiction” half of “science fiction” makes them seem just foreign enough to be believable without questioning the whys and the wherefores of the whole time-traveling concept. The only negative observation I have about this book is that a few grammatical or spelling errors were overlooked by the editor, and those can be a bit distracting, but they are not frequent. This book has a cinematic feel to it, like an action movie painted with words. It is entertaining from start to finish.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
