The Wolf in Underpants Freezes His Buns Off is a short graphic novel that follows the adventures of the forest creatures as they deal with winter’s arrival. This easy read is full of colorful illustrations that will keep younger readers interested all the way to the very end. The language is quite easy and even beginning readers would likely be able to make their way through the book, although they may need help with the order as the words are spread out throughout the graphic and they aren’t necessarily in a linear order. That being said, even if you read a lot of it out of order, it wouldn’t make a big difference to the plotline.
I really wanted to like this book. I loved the illustrations. But the premise just felt old and overdone. Scary creature who everyone has befriended suddenly seems to turn on them. Others jump to conclusions. In the end, scary creature is actually being nice and everyone else was just seeing what they wanted to see. Moral: be nice, don’t jump to conclusions, share everything you have. I get that literature and especially graphic novels which are appealing to children are a great medium for teaching, but this one just fell flat. And while every other creature in the book wears full clothes, the wolf only wears underwear, which was just weird.
An okay read that would be great for the younger elementary crowd just dipping their toes into the reading pool, but more experienced readers can find better options.
