A few months ago, Alex's world changed...forever. Now, just when it seems life is almost getting back to normal, Alex's grandfather crashes back into the picture with grave news: their friend Harry has fallen into the clutches of a familiar foe, and the old man needs Alex's help to rescue him. This time, the duo's desperate dash across Europe leads from Paris deep into Germany's foreboding Black Forest, as they chase down the mystery Harry had been investigating when he disappeared. A series of art thefts has made headlines across the continent, but the thieves are after more than priceless paintings. The Shadow Arts

by Damien Love

Overall Book Review:

The Shadow Arts is a worthy sequel to Damien Love’s debut novel, Monstrous Devices. Even though the first book was a stand-alone novel with its own plot, this new narrative picks up shortly after the end of the first book, and the action resumes immediately, as if the story had never ended. For those who read and enjoyed Monstrous Devices, this will be a welcome development.

Damien Love shows a particular skill with creating characters and adding just a dash of magic and mystery to our mundane world to make it a unique and exciting backdrop for those characters. The book follows the protagonists through several different European countries, and in each the author work in tidbits of history, lore, culture and, importantly, food. This description makes the setting seem very realistic, but Love doesn’t dwell on it so long that it would detract from the driving pace of the story.

Love’s character are well-developed individuals, whether they are heroes or villains, and even characters who occupy only a few pages of the story are given some interesting life. He is particularly good at writing dialogue that is witty, whether is it being used to explain, regale, or banter with other characters. Love’s inventiveness has delivered another story of imagination, wonder, and excitement with a depth of plot that will appeal not only to children but to adults as well.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
