Publisher's Note:

MEET KIRANMALA: INTERDIMENSIONAL DEMON SLAYER (Only she doesn't know it yet.) On the morning of her twelfth birthday, Kiranmala is just a regular sixth grader living in Parsippany, New Jersey . . . until her parents mysteriously vanish and a drooling rakkhosh demon slams through her kitchen, determined to eat her alive. Turns out there might be some truth to her parents' fantastical stories-like how Kiranmala is a real Indian princess and how she comes from a secret place not of this world. To complicate matters, two crush-worthy princes ring her doorbell, insisting they've come to rescue her. Suddenly, Kiran is swept into another dimension full of magic, winged horses, moving maps, and annoying, talking birds. There she must solve riddles and battle demons all while avoiding the Serpent King of the underworld and the Rakkhoshi Queen in order to find her parents and basically save New Jersey, her entire world, and everything beyond it . . .…

Overall Book Review:

Strong and bold characters lead the way on this dangerous, colorful, and uplifting crusade as Kiran races against time to save her parents.

East and west collide with an explosion of flavor in Sayantani Dasgupta’s The Serpent’s Secret.  The first book in the Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond series, Dasgupta masterfully blends together ancient folk tales and adds a dash of modern flare to create a rich and magical world for the reader to dive into. Throughout the pages of this spicy and exciting page-turner the author has infused a delicate and touching message about self-acceptance and family that will resonate with readers of all ages.  The Serpent’s Secret, as with all fairy tales, reaches in, touches that part of our hearts that longs for adventure and sets it humming.

About the Reviewer

I always say that I love to read and that books are my passion, but as I have grown a little older, I have come to realize that isn’t entirely true. I do love reading, but my true passion is stories. For as long as I can remember I have been completely enthralled with a good story, no matter the medium: books, theater, movies/TV shows–even a few video games (yes, I am a nerd).
