Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Bestselling author Jessica Day George continues her heartfelt fantasy series about a girl who can communicate with horses and a kingdom on the brink of collapse. Anthea knows the truth about horses. They're not carriers of deadly disease like everyone in their kingdom thinks; they're majestic creatures who share their thoughts and feelings with her through The Way. Anthea has convinced the king of this, but at a cost--he demands that horses and riders with The Way do his bidding. But when a deadly plague breaks out, the people believe that horses are the cause. As more fall ill, it's up to Anthea and her friends to transport medicine, all while keeping out of reach from Anthea's wicked mother. And when Anthea discovers a secret that could change the kingdom forever, she must risk everything to reveal the truth before it's too late. Continuing the sweeping storytelling of The Rose Legacy, bestselling author Jessica Day George delights readers--especially horse lovers--once again.…

The Queen’s Secret

by Jessica Day George

Overall Book Review:

The Queen’s Secret, by Jessica Day George, is the second installment of the Rose Legacy series. The story follows a young woman named Anthea and her companions in the Horse Brigade. The heroes of the horse brigade have the unusual ability of being able to communicate mentally with their horses. Together, they must stop a threat to their kingdom.

Jessica Day George presents the reader with a descriptive, well-visualized world that is familiar enough to be vividly believable while at the same time including enough fantasy elements to provide exciting escapism. The politics of the neighboring kingdoms provide a backdrop for the action, but for the most part that aspect stays in the background instead of bogging young readers down with complex intrigue. The protagonists are noble and community-minded, willing to put the needs of other people…and their horses…ahead of their own.

One interesting aspect of the author’s storytelling style is the unique use of a different narrative voice. The horses of the story speak often with their riders and carry on dialogue with them, and at some points, entire short chapters are told from a single horse’s point of view. This varied perspective provides entertainment but also serves to solidify the horses’ position as characters, not just pets, in the story.

Young readers, particularly those who love horses, will find much to enjoy in the book.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
