Book Review

Publisher's Note:

This summer the Penderwick sisters have a wonderful surprise: a holiday on the grounds of a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel’s sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel’s owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures. The icy-hearted Mrs. Tifton is not as pleased with the Penderwicks as Jeffrey is, though, and warns the new friends to stay out of trouble. Which, of course, they will—won’t they? One thing’s for sure: it will be a summer the Penderwicks will never forget. Deliciously nostalgic and quaintly witty, this is a story as breezy and carefree as a summer day.…

The Penderwicks

by Jeanne Birdsall

Overall Book Review:

The Penderwicks is a sweet family story with an old-fashioned feel and a cast of characters so endearing that I was sad to leave them when the book was finished. I loved Jeanne Birdsall’s depiction of a modern family with such strong and wonderful relationships; I found myself laughing over the sisters’ adventures and vividly remembering what it was like to be a child myself. Although the gentle pace and simple storylines of The Penderwicks may be an adjustment for modern readers who are used to action-packed books, kids and adults a like will find a lot to love in the stories of the four Penderwick sisters during their unforgettable summer vacation.

Content Analysis:

Profanity/Language: 2 religious exclamations.

Violence/Gore: A story is told about a man who is gored by a bull. Two children wrestle for fun. A girl falls into a pond and hits her head on a rock.

Sex/Nudity: One storyline has to do with a youthful crush and a girl’s attempts to win over a boy; there are several scenes of very understated flirting.

Mature Subject Matter:

Parent/child conflict, the death of a parent.

Alcohol / Drug Use:

None

About the Reviewer

As a kid, I used to tell people that I wanted to be a “professional book reviewer” when I grew up (along with writer/ballerina/figure skater/mom). I thought that any profession that involved the full-time reading of books was my idea of heaven. Getting the chance to review books is a little dream come true!
