The Montague Twins: The Witch’s Hand

by Nathan Page (author), Drew Shannon (illustrator)

Overall Book Review:

The Montague Twins:  The Witch’s Hand is a graphic novel set in 1969 with a throwback feel to the Hardy Boys in its stylistic, retro graphics and mystery premise.  But this isn’t your mother’s Hardy Boys.  The Montague Twins are a little more edgy, one of the antagonists is a whole lot more otherworldly, and did I mention that these brothers have magical powers?  So Hardy Boys?  Yes–and no.

Absolutely no skimping was done on the illustrations and with full color images, the result is beyond gratifying, complementing the narrative and alternatively carrying the narrative at the appropriate places.  The dialogue was frankly, exceptional, particularly between the brothers and at times quite clever and droll.  The cherry on top was a climax that kept on giving beyond expectation.  (And why the cat is wearing glasses I do not know, but I like it.)

Modern young adult readers will enjoy and perhaps even a few nostalgic older readers will find themselves charmed also.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
