Book Review

Publisher's Note:

In the bestselling tradition of Loving Frank and March comes a novel for anyone who loves Little Women. Millions of readers have fallen in love with Little Women. But how could Louisa May Alcott-who never had a romance-write so convincingly of love and heart-break without experiencing it herself? Deftly mixing fact and fiction, Kelly O'Connor McNees imagines a love affair that would threaten Louisa's writing career-and inspire the story of Jo and Laurie in Little Women. Stuck in small-town New Hampshire in 1855, Louisa finds herself torn between a love that takes her by surprise and her dream of independence as a writer in Boston. The choice she must make comes with a steep price that she will pay for the rest of her life.…

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott

by Kelly O'Connor McNees

Overall Book Review:

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott is the quintessential summer read. Smart and eloquent, readers will be enchanted from the very first page. Author Kelly O’Connor McNees conjures up a love story so spectacular, I often felt weak in the knees.

Lost Summer’s content is vivid, intelligent and impeccably researched. A fascinating Author’s Note at the end of the story separates fact from fiction. While the plot is brimming with the exploits of spunky Louisa, the tale also explores the themes of duty, passion, sacrifice, love and being true to oneself. Fans of Alcott’s Little Women will adore this book!

About the Reviewer

My mother was the one who sparked my love of books. Long before school instruction, she sat me down and taught me to read. My childhood was filled with trips to the library and bookmobile to find great books. My first loves were The Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Pippi Longstocking series by Astrid Lingren. Now as a mom and speech pathologist, I am constantly looking for good, clean books to use at home and in therapy. I enjoy reading many different genres, but my favorites are usually historical fiction. I married my best friend, the “boy next door”, and we have a beautiful little girl who we often find sprawled out on the floor, flipping through picture books. Together our family likes to swim, run and play tennis. Besides reading, I also love to bake, garden and travel.
