This heart-pounding mystery-adventure follows three kids who get lost in the woods at night and experience something they cannot quite explain. Secrets, spies, or maybe even a monster . . . what lies in the heart of the woods? Charlie Noon and Dizzy Heron are determined to find out. When their nemesis, Johnny Baines, plays a prank on them and night falls without warning, all three end up lost in the woods, trapped in a nightmare. Unforeseen dangers and impossible puzzles lurk in the shadows. Like it or not, Charlie and Dizzy must work with Johnny if they are to find a way out. But time can be tricky. . . . What if the night never ends?…

Overall Book Review:

What is going on! Is this a mystery? Is it a horror story? Or is it something else altogether?  The characters certainly are wondering this, and it is also what the reader will be thinking as they turn the pages of the book. And, this is a good thing.  When was the last time you read a book that kept you off-kilter?

A group of children become lost in the woods and things become strange, frightening, and confusing.  This is a quick read and the desire to figure out what is going on makes it a difficult book to put down so plan on devouring in a single sitting.  There are three major reveals or twists in this book that will surprise the reader, and they are artfully executed.

This book will appeal to both female and male readers.  As an age recommendation, it is probably best for fifth grade and up, as it takes some mental dot-connecting for everything to click into place. This is a clever book that might appeal to lovers of When You Reach Me.  (Oh, and be sure to read author’s notes at the end to tie it all up.)

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
