The Epic Origin of Super Potato is an entertaining read for a younger middle grade student. It delivers some chuckle-worthy humor and some light-hearted escapism. The plot is straightforward but tired. It uses the cliche of the super hero trying to apprehend his archnemesis in a predictable confrontation in which the tables are turned on the hero. However, this plot pattern has been used so often and so recently that even mocking the cliche feels like a cliche itself.
The book continues through a series of events that more or less make sense but mostly serve as a backdrop for the humor and gags, most of which are very good and readers will likely find funny. This graphic novel reads more like a continuous series of comic strips strung together than a single cohesive story that was written as a book. It is good for some laughs, but its story is not strong enough that children will likely look for the sequels.
