The Book of Tomorrow

by Cecelia Ahern

Overall Book Review:

In The Book of Tomorrow, Cecelia Ahern creatively unfolds the story of a self-centered rich girl, Tamara Goodwin, getting a dose of reality. The first chapters are a story of their own, telling of her more comfortable, affluent lifestyle with parties, irresponsibility and backstabbing. The real story begins when her life is suddenly altered by her father’s suicide. You begin to feel the eeriness that sets the tone for the rest of the book as you follow Tamara and her boundary-pushing reactions as her future unfolds before her eyes…literally. Slowly you begin to understand events and the importance of certain characters and their quirky attitudes, such as her uptight aunt and quiet uncle. The story can seem a bit disjointed at times as the author takes a while to tie-in certain parts of the story, but it all comes together in the end.

Content Analysis:

There were a couple instances where a character slaps another with hand and handbag.  Another when a character holds another character by the throat.

I was shocked at how easily Tamara throws swear words around.  It does ease up as the story progresses, but offensive profanity is something you will find in this book many times.

There are sexual references and strong talk between teenagers towards the beginning of the book. It is understood that a sexual act takes place, and while there’s no description, they are caught so there is talk about it.

Mature Subject Matter:

I feel the author tried to write this for, and wanted to connect with, teenagers but with certain scenes of sexual references, profanity, and alcohol, this book has a strong mature theme to it.

Alcohol / Drug Use:

Alcohol and smoking are mentioned several times when characters are at parties or when Tamara feels like she is under stress.  There is also mention of a character being given drugs without their knowledge.
