Book Review

Publisher's Note:

The rascally BADgers have escaped from jail again and they made an amazing discovery--a pizza mine! They love eating it, of course, and selling it to make money to fund their villainous plots. But there's a big problem: the Loose Pebbles library is tipping over without all that pizza to hold it up. And if it tips any farther, the entire island of Great Kerfuffle will flip over into the ocean! So it's up to Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face to save the day. But even with a shopping cart disguised as a horse, secret agent sunglasses, and an elephant who walks by at just the right moment, a surprise that's bigger and badder than ever throws them for a loop. Will the island of Great Kerfuffle be no more? We can't tell you, because that would spoil the story!…

Overall Book Review:

Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face and the Pizza of Peril tells of a fanciful caper involving kids, badgers, and a ninja librarian. The book has a lively and unusual cast of characters and is stuffed with comedy. The story is augmented by numerous illustrations that complement the witty descriptions. These pictures will engage the attention of younger readers. The author also uses stylized lettering to make the book interesting to children by providing visual clues as to the correct inflection to use when reading the words.

Although the writing style and the humor are clever, the story itself is lacking in substance. The narrative feels more like a series of random events strung together that a fluid story. The storytelling serves as a canvas on which to hang the jokes and silliness. This story will be entertaining for kids who are only reading a book for the laughs, but any who are looking for a good story will be disappointed.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
