Skunked! is book one in a six book chapter book series. This series uses the characters from the 2010 Newbury Honor Book The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Skunked! was published much later in 2016. (It is not necessary to read the original book.)
What sets this book apart in the chapter book demographic is more advanced language, a more nuanced historical voicing style, and a stronger story. This probably isn’t a book to put in the hands of most first and second graders, as the Lexile level is 740, which translates roughly to a mid-fourth grade reading level. But it is a great choice for those young readers who are reading far above their grade level. It will give reading challenge and satisfaction while providing a story that is gentle enough for young readers. Plus, the theme of helping animals is a popular one. With great illustrations, it is cute and fun and recommended for early readers who want a challenge or older reluctant readers who balk at longer books.
