Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Perfect for fans of Margaret Peterson Haddix, When You Reach Me, and Savvy, this charming time-travel story from husband-and-wife team Marisa de los Santos and David Teague follows one girl's race to change the past in order to save her father's future. Thirteen-year-old Margaret knows her father is innocent, but that doesn't stop the cruel Judge Biggs from sentencing him to death. Margaret is determined to save her dad, even if it means using her family's secret—and forbidden—ability to time travel. With the help of her best friend, Charlie, and his grandpa Josh, Margaret goes back to a time when Judge Biggs was a young boy and tries to prevent the chain of events that transformed him into a corrupt, jaded man. But with the forces of history working against her, will Margaret be able to change the past? Or will she be pushed back to a present in which her father is still doomed? Told in alternating voices between Margaret and Josh, this heartwarming story shows that sometimes the forces of good need a little extra help to triumph over the forces of evil. This book was nominated for a Texas Bluebonnet Award in 2015-2016.…

Saving Lucas Biggs

by Marisa de los Santos and David Teague

Overall Book Review:

Saving Lucas Biggs is a collaborative effort between Marisa de los Santos and David Teague which follows the adventures of Margaret, a teenage girl who tries to deliver Margaret’s father from a wrongful conviction of murder. Rather than accomplish this through mundane means such as appeals and activism, Margaret has an extra method of dealing with such a problem: time travel.

This book has several good qualities. It depicts historic events with which readers, especially the young readers who are its target audience, may not be familiar. The way it deals with the subject of time travel is more believable than some descriptions of that ability, if the words “time travel” and “believable” can be used in the same sentence. Finally, the style of writing is very beautiful, and in some places it seems almost lyrical, even though it is prose. The authors choose unusual words and craft them into stylish sentences.

However, this book is difficult to wade through. The narrative drags in some places, and even the fine prose can’t make up for this slow pacing of the story. The main plot itself is not nearly as interesting as the historical events that provide its background. In addition, the story is confusing in some places and, while it has a refreshingly positive message, this message is likely to be lost on the readers of its target audience. This book is likely to be more popular with literature and reading teachers than with the young audience for which it was written.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
