At my sons’ urging, I recently read Ranger’s Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan, the first in a series that they have devoured. This fantasy, set in a world resembling medieval Europe, follows fifteen year-old Will as he reluctantly becomes apprentice to the mysterious and reclusive Halt. Unlike most recent fantasy, this book is light on magic, but heavy on action with the fantasy element provided by the mythical creatures Will and Halt battle. (At times I did wish for a map as I navigated the fantasy world.) Flanagan’s writing is elegant with a classic flair in a style similar to Eragon. Because of the protagonist’s age and development, Will is especially easy for boys to connect with–making this is a great guy read! An enjoyable book, the great news is that it is the first in a series of ten. The final book of the series was published this spring so you won’t have to wait!
Content Analysis:
The violence in this book includes a boar hunt, bullies hazing a younger student, a fight involving sticks and practice swords, and a battle against some mythical creatures.
The only instances of profanity noted were two mild words.
Sexual content is none, unless you count one chaste kiss.
