Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Twelve-year-old Peter Gronkowski prides himself on being a professional businessman. Tired of the clichéd lemonade stands that line his block, he decides to start a better business with the help of an intern. But his intern of choice, the quiet and writerly Rachel Chambers, turns out to be more than he bargained for. Rachel is innovative, resourceful, driven--and when she's had enough of Peter's overbearing management style, she decides to start a competing empire next door. As their rivalry and sabotage tactics become more outrageous--Slander! Espionage! Lemonade threats!--Peter and Rachel ultimately learn the hard way that "nothing gold can stay" and that friendship is more important than money. Alternating perspectives reveal what really motivates each character to win. And Peter's memos and "business tips" as well as excerpts from Rachel's melodramatic novel-in-progress generate fresh hilarity and tension at every page turn. Payback on Poplar Lane is a pitch-perfect comedy with heart, reminiscent of your favorite classic middle-grade series.…

Overall Book Review:

Payback on Poplar Lane is a fantastic book! Tween business shark Peter Gronkowski thinks he knows everything there is to know about business. He cares little about friends and anyone’s feelings and can’t stop thinking about his business and himself. His neighbor, Rachel Chambers, whom many barely notice, wants to stop being invisible and teach Peter a lesson in the process. When she starts her own business, giving him competition, things get complicated for both of them.

All the characters author Margaret Mincks creates are so much fun. Peter is a hilarious boy who you can picture perfectly with the expressive descriptions Mincks gives us. You’ll love Rachel as she finds her voice and finally gets noticed. Both characters also learn some very valuable lessons after making some poor choices. Being a semi-light and funny read, I think this will appeal to reluctant tween readers, especially those who enjoy or aspire to running their own business. I can’t wait to read this book with my children, not only for the entertainment factor but also because it brings up some great opportunities to discuss things such as honesty and being a good friend.

About the Reviewer

I love being able to help busy parents who just don’t have the time to pre-screen all their children’s books and know how much I appreciate it as my sons have gotten older. I feel very blessed that my amazing husband makes it possible for me to be a stay-at-home mother to four amazing boys. When not reading or enjoying time with my family, I like baking, especially trying new recipes, and the occasional sewing project.
