In the years after the Omnic Crisis, the American Southwest is ruled by vultures looking to profit off the chaos. The West is ripe for the taking, and Elizabeth Caledonia Ashe intends to write her name across it. When Ashe is arrested yet again on the morning of her high school graduation, her aloof, old-money parents decide to disinherit her from the family fortune. To steal back what's rightfully hers, Ashe teams up with her omnic butler, B.O.B., and local ruffian Jesse McCree for a series of heists, catapulting the trio into a game of fast money and dangerous alliances. Along the way, Ashe discovers that family isn't just about blood. It's about the people who've got your back when your back's against the wall. Full of high-octane chases and action-packed stand-offs, the second novel for Overwatch explores the founding of the Deadlock Gang and the origins of fan-favorite heroes Ashe and McCree. Overall Book Review:

Deadlock Rebels is a fast-paced adventure set in the world of the popular Overwatch video game. The setting is many years in the future, where sentient robots live alongside humans, but the style of the novel is influenced heavily by tales of the “Old West”. This book feels very much like a Western full of lawless gangs, shootouts, and a heist that are reminiscent of stagecoach or train robberies in the old days. The characters in this book are instantly recognizable to players of the video game, but the author does an excellent job of conveying their personalities in a vibrant and endearing way to readers who are unfamiliar with them. The heroes of this story could be more accurately described as protagonists than actual heroes, since they are thieves at heart, but they embody the old adage of “honor among thieves” and are good people at heart in spite of their profession. Young readers will find their free spirits entertaining and will admire their loyalty and camaraderie. This book is a light-hearted and fun read for anyone who enjoys sci-fi or Westerns, whether they have any previous knowledge of the game that inspired the book or not.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
