Overall Book Review:

The Overwatch Anthology is a collection of short stories that originally appeared as separate short comics. The stories provide background information for the cast of characters associated with the Overwatch video game. Since the game is a science fiction game with fast-paced action, most of the stories have plenty of excitement. The stories have different writers and artists, so no two are exactly alike, but the separate entries are quality in both artistic style and strength of story.

The mood of each story varies depending on the characters involved, with some being light-hearted and fun, some being gritty action, and some being unexpectedly deep for comics based on a video game. For example, the topics of terrorism and political insurrection are explored using a science-fiction setting that makes these weighty topics interesting to the book’s teen audience, while keeping the discussions from being too mature for young readers.

The characters presented in this book are as varied and colorful as the stories in which they appear. The villains are unashamedly evil, but these dark characters are countered by truly heroic individuals who are willing to put their own lives on the line to protect other people, even people they do not know. All the characters are interesting, but one stands out in particular because she is on the autism spectrum but is a character who uses her unique mental perspective as an advantage rather than a disability. This strong character is one who young people who are struggling with autism in particular, and other diagnoses in general, should find inspiring.

Overall, this book is a fun read for fans of graphic novels, a good pick for those who like contemporary science fiction, and an absolute must-read for Overwatch players and fans.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
