Book Review

Publisher's Note:

"Dust piles up like snow across the prairie. . . ." A terrible accident has transformed Billie Jo's life, scarring her inside and out. Her mother is gone. Her father can't talk about it. And the one thing that might make her feel better -- playing the piano -- is impossible with her wounded hands. To make matters worse, dust storms are devastating the family farm and all the farms nearby. While others flee from the dust bowl, Billie Jo is left to find peace in the bleak landscape of Oklahoma -- and in the surprising landscape of her own heart.…

Out of the Dust

by Karen Hesse

Overall Book Review:

Winner of the Newbery Award, as well as six other awards, this book is a classic children’s novel that should be in everyone’s repertoire. Set in Oklahoma during the Great Depression, this book follows the life of a young girl named Billie Jo. It is full of the loss, poverty, and extreme weather conditions of the dust bowl of the Great Depression.

This book is written in stanza form, similar to Unbound by Ann E. Berg. Each entry is short; however, you won’t want to stop reading. It has a similar feel to Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan or Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Perfect for historical fiction lovers.

Although some of the content is very heavy given the subject matter, this is a book of second chance and hope amidst seemingly impossible obstacles.

About the Reviewer

My favorite books are ones that change me and my perceptions of the world in a significant way. My favorite genre is probably historical fiction with biographies as a close second.
