Operation Bunny is Book One in the Wings & Co. middle grade series. It is a little bit of magic mixed with a detective agency concept–and a whole lot of fabulous characterization. The prose and dialogue style are brilliant. (Bunnification! I am jealous that I never invented such a marvelous word.) The narrative clips along with nary a dull moment. How could it be dull with large talking cats, wandering shops, magical keys, and a vindictive witch?
With its fabulous illustrations by David Roberts, this series is a good next step up for those moving on from chapter books. Perhaps it was the dry humor, but Operation Bunny is one of the more enjoyable middle grade reads I have encountered recently. No need to fight with your child over who gets to read it, as it would also be an excellent read-aloud.
