Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Eighteen-year-old Aihui Ying dreams of becoming a world-class engineer like her father, but after his sudden murder, her life falls apart. Left with only a journal of her father’s engineering secrets and a jade pendant snatched from the assassin, a heartbroken Ying follows the trail to the capital and the prestigious Engineers Guild—a place that harbors her father’s hidden past—determined to discover why anyone would threaten a man who ultimately chose a quiet life over fame and fortune. Disguised as her brother, Ying manages to infiltrate the guild’s male-only apprenticeship trial with the help of an unlikely ally—Aogiya Ye-yang, the taciturn eighth prince of the High Command. With her father’s renown placing a target firmly on her back, Ying must stay one step ahead of her fellow competitors, the jealous guild masters, and the killer still hunting for her father’s journal. Complicating everything is her increasingly tangled relationship with the prince, who may have mysterious plans of his own. The secrets concealed within the guild can be as deadly as the weapons they build—and with her life and the future of her homeland at stake, Ying doesn’t know who to trust. Can she avenge her father even if it means going against everything he stood for, or will she be next in the mastermind’s line of fire?…

Of Jade and Dragons

by Amber Chen

Overall Book Review:

There has been a recent surge in Asian-inspired YA fantasy, and I love the twist this gives to these worlds. Of Jade and Dragons continues in this trend and mixes in a steampunk element, making the story pop. Ying, the main character, is a creative, spunky and engaging protagonist. Multiple plot lines keep the story moving, with a few twists I didn’t expect. Ying is also passionate about engineering and creating things, which is a cool asset to the story. Some of the secondary characters also really stand out. They have individual motives, and none of them are strictly good or bad people, which I appreciated. The author mentioned this story is meant to read like a Chinese drama, and while that’s not my area of expertise, this story does have a dramatic flair.

However, the story felt a bit disjointed overall, like too much was going on, and the pieces weren’t quite integrated correctly. Some elements felt over-dramatized or like the whole book was trying too hard. I struggled a little bit to connect with the prose, which made it hard to stay immersed in the story. However, many readers enjoy dramatic stories, and prose is often not a major concern for YA readers. This may still be a good pick for fans of Asian-inspired YA fantasy.

About the Reviewer

I was homeschooled from kindergarten to grade 10, which gave me a love for reading. Growing up books were an integral part of my life, and I’ve always been able to make time to read. I’m most widely read in YA fiction, but fantasy is becoming my favorite genre. My free time not spent reading is mostly spent outdoors camping, riding a bicycle, or otherwise enjoying nature. I’m also a science nerd with a special interest in entomology.
