Book Review

Publisher's Note:

A quirky, creepy fantasy set in Eerie-on-Sea finds a colorful cast of characters in hot pursuit of a sea monster thought to convey a surprising gift. It’s winter in the town of Eerie-on-Sea, where the mist is thick and the salt spray is rattling the windows of the Grand Nautilus Hotel. Inside, young Herbert Lemon, Lost and Founder for the hotel, has an unexpected visitor. It seems that Violet Parma, a fearless girl around his age, lost her parents at the hotel when she was a baby, and she’s sure that the nervous Herbert is the only person who can help her find them. The trouble is, Violet is being pursued at that moment by a strange hook-handed man. And the town legend of the Malamander — a part-fish, part-human monster whose egg is said to make dreams come true — is rearing its scaly head. As various townspeople, some good-hearted, some nefarious, reveal themselves to be monster hunters on the sly, can Herbert and Violet elude them and discover what happened to Violet’s kin? This lighthearted, fantastical mystery, featuring black-and-white spot illustrations, kicks off a trilogy of fantasies set in the seaside town.…

Malamander

by Thomas Taylor

Overall Book Review:

Malamander, by Thomas Taylor with delightful illustrations that bring the story to life by Tom Booth, is a magical mystery steeped in a peculiar local legend. It takes place in Eerie-on-Sea with a quirky cast of characters. There’s a vindictive power-hungry villain, an eccentric beach comber, a cat that talks, an orphaned underdog, a dastardly man with a hook for a hand, and a Lost-and-Founder, all converging in this sleepy little seaside town. The mystery unfolds as the fabled sea monster seems to decide to make an appearance.

Violet, the orphaned underdog, is on a quest to find her lost parents and asking Herbie, the Lost-and-Founder of the local hotel, to help seems like a logical place to start. Little do they realize that the disappearance of her parents is linked to the mystery surrounding the local legend of the malamander, the fabled sea monster. As they set to find their answers, things start to get exciting in this quiet little village, taking the reader on an exciting adventure of mystery and suspense.

Author Thomas Taylor mixes the right amount of oddities, mystery, and folklore to make Malamander a thrillingly spooky read that will keep you guessing–as well as reading more just to find out what odd thing will happen next and just who has caught the attention of the malamander. Herbie and Violet are relatable characters who have fears and doubts, but they rely on their wits and each other to overcome them and solve the mystery. Just be sure to have the next book in the series ready because it ends in a cliff hanger with many unanswered questions as well.

About the Reviewer

I remember as a young girl sneaking out of my bedroom to read by the hall light my parents left on, just so I could finish an exciting book. I’ve always loved books and reading is somewhat of a passion for me–something I’m passing on to my kids. I have four children and I have a hard time making them turn out the light when they say, “But I just got to the good part”.
