Magicalamity

by Kate Saunders

Overall Book Review:

Magicalamity is a fast-paced, fun, and often totally silly satirical fantasy that would hold a lot of appeal for fans of Brandon Sanderson’s Alcatraz books and other middle-grade satires. I enjoyed the funny, often-unexpected twists and turns of the plot and the hilarious (and endearing) characters. Magicalamity manages to satirize the middle-grade fantasy adventure story while being a hilariously fun fantasy adventure itself; readers who are familiar with popular middle-grade fantasy series like Rowling’s Harry Potter books or Riordan’s Percy Jackson books will enjoy the sly allusions to fantasy stereotypes. And after all, what’s not to love about a book with frequent appearances by a sweet and loveable genie with a slightly nefarious past?

Magicalamity would be a terrific read for preteens and teens who have a good sense of humor and are looking for a light, enjoyable read.

Content Analysis:

Profanity/Language:  No American epithets; however, there’s a fairly liberal sprinkling of British profanity throughout.

Violence/Gore:  There is considerable comic violence throughout the book, including references to magical battles and “bad” characters and animals being killed. There are also a few verbal threats. There are two comical references to a character selling someone into slavery and later regretting it. A character is accused of murder.

Sex/Nudity:  There are at least a dozen references throughout the book to adult fairies being nude or attending nude balls. All of it is tongue-in-cheek and there is no description of nudity.

Mature Subject Matter:

None

Alcohol / Drug Use:

Adults drink alcohol on several occasions.

About the Reviewer

As a kid, I used to tell people that I wanted to be a “professional book reviewer” when I grew up (along with writer/ballerina/figure skater/mom). I thought that any profession that involved the full-time reading of books was my idea of heaven. Getting the chance to review books is a little dream come true!
